Buddhism

The Buddha's path to a wiser, kinder life

Buddhism began with the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, which means "the awakened one". He lived in India about 2,500 years ago and taught a way to understand suffering and to live with more wisdom and kindness.

Today Buddhism has many schools, such as Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana, practised across Asia and around the world. These journeys draw on teachings the schools share and explain every word as it comes. You do not need to call yourself Buddhist or know how to meditate.

This tradition's season

Vassa

Usually July to October, moving each year with the lunar calendar.

Vassa is the Buddhist rains retreat, about three months from roughly July to October, moving each year with the lunar calendar. It is mainly kept by monks and nuns, who stay in one place to practise, while lay people support them and often take on a small commitment for the season. This journal follows those months with a short passage from the early Buddhist texts, a question and a small practice each day. You do not need any prior knowledge, or to observe Vassa, to use it, in season or at any time of year.
