Sikhi

A daily practice of Sikh wisdom

Sikhi, often called Sikhism, is the faith taught by Guru Nanak and the nine Sikh Gurus who followed him, beginning in Punjab, in South Asia, about five hundred years ago. Its scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, teaches devotion to one God, honest work, sharing with others and the equality of every person.

You do not need to know Punjabi, any prayers or any practices to begin. Every Sikh word is explained as it comes.

ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

In the midst of this world, practise selfless service, and you shall be given a place in the Divine Court.

This tradition's season

Shaheedi Hafta

A week in late December.

Shaheedi Hafta is a week in late December when many Sikhs remember the four young sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, and their grandmother Mata Gujri Ji, who gave their lives rather than give up their faith. These eight short days follow their story gently, with a line of Sikh scripture, a question and a small practice, focusing on courage, faith and kindness rather than on how they died. You need no prior knowledge and do not need to observe anything, and you can begin in December or at any time of year.

Day 1

Every Breath is Grace

Our Gurus taught us that the chance to live a human life is the rarest gift. Gratitude begins with seeing each breath not as something owed to us, but as grace given freely.

If I treated every breath today as sacred, what would I do differently with my time?

Describe how this perspective could shift your choices today.

Today's PracticePause three times today and take one conscious breath, silently saying thank you.
