Jewish wisdom for everyday life

Judaism is the faith and way of life of the Jewish people. It goes back more than three thousand years to Abraham and Sarah and to the covenant, a lasting promise, between God and the people of Israel. Its teachings are found in the Torah, the wider Hebrew Bible and centuries of commentary by rabbis, Jewish teachers.

Jewish life has many streams, such as Orthodox, Conservative and Reform. These journeys draw on texts they share and explain each Hebrew word as it comes. No prior knowledge or observance is needed.

This tradition's season

Elul to Yom Kippur

Late summer to early autumn, on dates set by the Hebrew calendar.

This journal follows the forty days from the start of Elul, the last month of the Jewish year, through Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The season falls in late summer and early autumn, on different dates each year because the Hebrew calendar follows the moon. It is a time of teshuvah, returning: a gentle, honest look at the year that is ending and a turn toward the person you want to be. No prior knowledge or observance is needed, and you can use it in season or at any time of year.
